Job Description

Members of the Daily Beast art department wear many creative hats: they can photo edit, digitally illustrate, make social graphics, create gifs, create photoshop collages and infographics—all with a quick pace and precise accuracy. 

The Photo Editor is responsible for maintaining quality visual content for all facets of The Daily Beast. Additional responsibilities may include pitching visual content, producing photo features, photographing original content, and designing digital templates for series.

The Photo Editor works directly with writers and editors to shape the best art for each piece and reports directly to the Editorial Visual Director.

This position is part-time (20 hours per week) and will include one weekend day.

Responsibilities

• Curate and edit photos for news stories and features.
• Design illustrations and social graphics.
• Produce photo features.
• Create photo collages and infographics.

Qualifications

• Must have excellent editorial judgment and up-to-date knowledge of news, politics, entertainment, and pop culture
• Familiarity with The Daily Beast's content, tone, and aesthetic
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven newsroom
• Solid understanding of fair-use law and photo licensing 
• Excellent research skills and social media chops
• Proficiency with Photoshop required (and a familiarity with other Adobe Cloud products is a plus)
• Strong image editing skills, with a sharp eye for engaging photography and ethical sense of what is appropriate for each story
• Schedule flexibility—ability and willingness to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed
• A self-starter who is comfortable both working alone and with a team
• A collaborative spirit and positive attitude 
• An understanding of pressing topics for diverse cultures, communities, and racial and ethnic identities.
• 1 years in a newsroom or digital media company
• Can be located anywhere, but New York City is preferred.
